Question
I came across this word in a series of old satirical cartoon cards depicting a child dressed to portray various Russian political types from around the time of the Revolution: Bolshevik, Menshevik, Anarchist, Social Democrat, Bourgeois, Worker, Cadet, Moderate, and Social Revolutionary.
But I haven't been unable to find a translation of Бунднетъ anywhere. That cartoon is of a child dressed in a black cape, holding an automatic pistol over his head and what appears to be a toy ball under the other arm.
Does anyone know what it means?
Answer
Hi Brian,
Probably, бунднетъ means a member of General Jewish Labour Bund. It was a secular Jewish socialist party in Russia. You can read more about it here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/General_Jewish_Labour_Bund
