На vs Для – what is the difference?

Asked by Bill on July 27, 2019

Question

So I have spotted that both of these words can be used to mean "for" in the context of purpose.... as in the following: -
Нам надо приготовить картошка на обед (we need to cook potatoes for lunch)
Вот масло для риса (here is butter for the rice)

What is the rule for why one uses на and the other для?

Answer

Hi Bill,

In this case, на обед, на завтрак, на ужин are exceptions. The preposition на is always used with the names of the meals. На is also used with time expressions: на четверг (by Thursday), на конец марта (by the end of March), etc.
