Question
Thank you Yulia.
After reading your answer, I wondered what word for "avoid" one would use in Russian if in the corresponding English sentence the word "avoid" was followed by a gerund. I fed Google-Translate the following sentence
I avoided seeing him
and this is what came back...
Я избегал его видеть
I know from experience that it is not unusual for Google-Translate to make mistakes. What do you think of this translation? How would you translate "I avoided seeing him" ?
Thank you
Answer
Hello George,
The Russian verb избегать-избежать (to avoid) can be used with an infinitive or with a noun in the Genitive case.
Она избегала встречаться с ним.
Она избегала встреч с ним. She avoided meeting him.
