Question
I've come across 2 words for belt -- пояс and ремень. What is the difference between them? Which is best to describe a man's belt?
Thank you!
Answer
Hi David,
Sometimes they are used as synonyms, especially when they mean a piece of clothes. However, ремень always has a buckle, and пояс does not have it normally. When speaking about means of transport, we always use the word ремень: Пристегните ремни (Fasten your seatbelts).
