Question
As far as I can tell, снижать and уменьшать mean about the same thing -- to reduce, lessen, diminish. Is there a real difference?
Thanks!
Answer
Hi David,
They are synonyms. In some collocations снижать-снизить is more widely used. For example, with money (price, salary, etc.) and with temperature. Снизить температуру: Reduce the temperature. Снизить зарплату: Reduce the salary. Уменьшать-уменьшить is more used with countable objects. Уменьшить фотографию: Reduce the photo.
