The Future tense of хотеть

Asked by George Jagels on April 13, 2020

Question

My “Barron’s 501 Russian Verbs” states that the verb хотеь is not used in the future tense of the imperfective aspect. When I feed Google Translate “ They will want ” I get back “ они захотят ” which is what I expected. However, GT tells me that “ They will want more food ” translates as “ они будут хотеть больше еды ”. I realize the GT sometimes makes mistakes. Is it making a mistake in this instance?

Thank you

Answer

Hi George,

Sorry for the delay!

You can say буду хотеть, it exists, but it is quite rare because if you want something, you normally want to have the result of it, to have this thing or to do something. So the perfective aspect захочу is normally used.
