Do you know how to use Russian conjunctions до того как, в то время как, and после того как? They mean “before something happened”, “in the meantime (as something is happening)”, and “after something happened”. After these conjunctions, you have to use a full utterance, not just a noun.

Я вернулся домой до обеда. I returned home before lunchtime.
Я вернулся домой до того, как моя семья начала обедать. I got home before my family started eating lunch.
