How to Say Years in Russian

Did you know that we use Prepositional (for example, “In the year 1993”) and Genitive cases (for example, “In September of the year 1993”) to say years in Russian? The first number(s) of the year are cardinal and they are not declined, and the last one is ordinal and it is declined as an adjective. The exception is the year 2000, it is called двухтысячный год and it is declined as an adjective because it does not have any cardinal numbers.

For example,

Я родился в сентября тысяча девятьсот восемьдесят первого года. I was born in September, 1981 (literally: “Of the year 1993”).

Они женились в тысяча девятьсот девяносто пятом году. They got married in 1995 (literally: “In the year 1995”).
