The Prepositions спустя and через

Did you know that the prepositions через and спустя are synonyms when used  in the past tense? They can also be followed by the additional preposition после and the Genitive case. They are both used in the situation when one event follows another one. Спустя is quite bookish though, while через is used both in written texts and everyday speech.

For example,

Через год после рождения сына они переехали в Россию. A year after the birth of their son they moved to Russia (everyday speech).

Спустя год после рождения сына они переехали в Россию. A year after the birth of their son they moved to Russia (more formal).
