Word order in Russian

December 5, 2021 | Tags: How to say it in Russian word order

Did you know that Russian word order is flexible? The neutral word order is: Subject – Verb – Object, for example:

Я кормлю кота. I am feeding a cat.

But we also can say:

Кота кормлю я. or Кормлю кота я. or Кота я кормлю. or Кормлю я кота.

These sentences have the same meaning but different focus. This is because in Russian sentences first convey a known information (“theme” – Я), and then introduce a new one (“rheme” – кормлю кота). In emotive speech, Russians can move rheme to the beginning of a sentence, like in the examples above.
