How to Express Contrast in Russian

Did you know that we have several words that express contrast in Russian? These words are однако (however), тем не менее (nevertheless) and несмотря на (inspite of, despite).

For example,

Такое толкование, однако, неоднозначно. This interpretation, however, is open to question.

Ему не рекомендовали заниматься горными лыжами. Тем не менее, зимой он опять поехал в годы.

The doctors did not recommend him to go skiing. However, in winter he went to the mountains again.

Несмотря на плохую погоду, он поехали на озеро. Despite bad weather, they went to the lake.
