How to Express Opposing Ideas in Russian

Did you know that we have many different expressions that have to do with opposing ideas? For example, несмотря на то, что (in spite of the fact that), однако (however, nevertheless) and тем не менее (however).

For example,

Несмотря на то, что он не пришёл, конференция всё-таки состоялась. In spite of the fact he did not arrive, the conference still took place.

Я его долго убеждала, однако он всё равно не был согласен с моим мнением. I tried to convince him for a long time, however he did not agree with my opinion.

Я написал прекрасную работу. Тем не менее, преподавателю она не понравилась. I wrote an excellent work. However, the teacher did not like it.
