How to give an explanation in Russian

Did you know that there are several ways to explain something in Russian? To do so, you can use the expressions то есть (that is) and а именно (namely).

For example:

Мы живём недалеко от Москвы, а именно в 20 километрах. We live not far from Moscow, namely 20 kilometers away.

Оно было высотой шесть дюймов, то есть около пятнадцати сантиметров. It was six inches high, that is, about fifteen centimeters.
