Plural nouns ending with -ья

There is a limited group of masculine and neutral nouns whose plural form ends in –ья, regardless of the usual rules for forming plurals. Remember those words and don’t confuse them with feminine singular nouns with the same ending (e.g., семья (family), статья (article), судья (judge), свинья (pig), etc.)!

  • Муж (husband) – мужья (husbands)
  • Сын (son) – сыновья (sons)
  • Брат (brother) – братья (brothers)
  • Стул (chair) – стулья (chairs)
  • Лист (leaf) – листья (leaves)
  • Друг (friend) – друзья (friends)
  • Князь (prince) – князья (princes)
  • Дерево (tree) – деревья (trees)
