In the previous post, we looked at examples of substantivized adjectives in Russian. In this post, we will get acquainted with substantivized participles. Many of them are so familiar that they are not so easy to recognize as participles.

  • Ведущий” (host) – referring to someone leading or hosting a program or event.
  • Служащий” (employee) – denoting someone employed in a service or administrative capacity.
  • Управляющий” (manager) – denoting someone in a managerial or supervisory role.
  • Будущее” (future) – representing the concept of what is to come or the future.
  • Раненый” (wounded person) – referring to someone who has been injured or wounded.
  • Убитый” (killed person) – denoting someone who has been killed or murdered.
  • Арестованный” (arrested person) – referring to someone who has been apprehended or detained by authorities.
  • Провожающие” (escorts) – referring to people accompanying someone or seeing them off.

Just like substantivized adjectives, substantivized participles also retain the case endings of their original forms, so it’s important to use them appropriately in context.

These examples demonstrate how participles can be substantivized in Russian, allowing them to function as nouns and represent various roles, states, or actions.
