Useful expression ‘всё равно’

Всё равно’ carries a sense of indifference or nonchalance. It is often used to convey a disregard for a particular outcome or situation. Literally translating to ‘everything is equal’, it actually means ‘it doesn’t matter’, ‘it’s all the same’.

For example, when faced with two options, one might respond with a shrug and say ‘Мне всё равно’. With that the person would imply that the choice doesn’t matter as both options are perceived as equal or inconsequential.

In a sentence ‘всё равно’ plays the role of a predicate. The subject is expressed by a noun or a pronoun in the form of the dative case. Look at the examples below.

  • Ты хочешь пойти в кино или на концерт? = Do you want to go to the cinema or to a concert?
    Мне всё равно. = It doesn’t matter to me.
  • Все будут смотреть на неё, но ей всё равно. = Everyone will look at her, but she doesn’t care.
  • Я здесь, потому что мне не всё равно. = I’m here because I care.
