Why Is a Ladybird Called “God’s Little Cow” (“божья коровка”) in Russian?

November 30, 2023 | Tags: Facts about Russian

The name of this small insect, with its red wings and black dots, sounds unusual not only in Russian but also in many European languages, including English (ladybird), German (Marienkäfer), and Spanish (mariquita). One possible explanation for the name in various languages is its association with the Virgin Mary. The red wings of the ladybird, resembling Mary’s red cloak in early depictions, might be the reason for this connection.

Now, what about the Russian name “божья коровка,” which literally translates to “God’s little cow”? We don’t have a definitive answer to this question. The most common explanation is based on the characteristics of ladybirds. First, they can produce a substance that resembles milk, serving as a defense mechanism against predators (note that this “milk” is inedible). Secondly, ladybirds benefit farmers by consuming insects that pose a threat to crops, such as aphids. In the past, people considered the assistance of ladybirds in pest control as a blessing from God and, in gratitude, gave them this name.

So, what do you think? Can this explanation be trusted? Even if it’s not entirely accurate, we hope it helps you remember the name of this insect in Russian.
