The 5-letter spelling rule applies only to the endings of Russian nouns, adjectives, participles and pronouns.
After the letters ж, ш, ч, щ, ц, write o if the ending is stressed and write e if it is not.
Check some examples (stressed vowels are in bold):
- с отцом, с курицей, с перцем
- ножом, мужем, врачом
- о большом, о хорошем, о настоящем
- о нашей, вашей
